Nick’s Top Picks for 2008

So it's that time again, when we look back at all the records that came out in the last 365 days and say which are our faves.

First I would like to give honorable mention to a few records that didn't make my top ten list but deserved to be looked at.

  • The Verve: Fourth
  • The Kooks: Konk
  • Michael Franti & Spearhead: All Rebel Rockers
  • Black Keys: Attack & Releas
  • The Avett Brothers: The Second Gleam

Now on with the list:

10. Drive By Truckers: Brighter Then Creation's Dark

  • The truckers make a valiant showing and don't miss a beat in their first record after the departure of Jason Isbell.

9. Elbow: The Seldom Seen Kid

  • Elbow picked up the 2008 Mercury Prize with this gem.

8. The Whigs: Mission Control

  • Not only do these guys put on a great live show but their CD rounds the bases with one rocking track after the next.

7. Old Crow Medicine Show: Tennessee Pusher

  • OCMS throws it all on the griddle and fries it up in some bacon grease with Don Was producing.

6. Los Campesinos!: Hold On Now Youngster

  • The first of two 2008 releases for LC, it's manic and magnificent.

5. Sigur Ros: Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust

  • The guys form Iceland took it easy on us DJ's, there's a pronounceable song title on this one.

4. Wild Sweet Orange: We Have Cause To Be Uneasy

  • The Orange only have cause to be uneasy about how they should follow up this fantastic record.

3. Fleet Foxes: Fleet Foxes

  • Who doesn't love harmonies in pop music.

2. The Raconteurs: Consolers Of The Lonley

  • Sorry there is no consolation prize for coming in second, but what a record.

1. Vampire Weekend: Vampire Weekend

  • The Ivy league and African inspired guitar licks seem to be a winning combination.
