The Weekly Feed 5/25

Welcome to another episode of The Weekly Feed, the show that scrapes the blog barrel for all best tracks making the web rounds and combines them all into one big link-centered mixtape.  I’m your host Kyle Meredith and most of you are probably trying to sqeeze just a little bit more Memorial Day weekend out before heading back to the grind.  We got ya covered.  Music from Boxharp, Phoenix, Danger Mouse, Bowerbirds, Mark mallman, The XYZ Affair and plenty more.

Peelander-Z – “Lets Go! Karaoke Party!”

And to kick off this whole crazy shindig is the band Peelander-Z.  I’ve spent many an minute trying to explain this band to people.  The Ramones on a Japanese energy drink?  Or maybe you take an awesome Japanese game show and infuse it with poppy punk rock.  The again, Brian at Feel The City summed it up nicely when he called them a “Mighty Morphine acid trip.”  From their new album P-Pop High School.

Foreign Born – Early Warnings

From the album Person To Person which is being put out on the Secretly Canadian label, which seems to be putting out a ton of great stuff right now - bands like Richard Swift, Anthony & The Johnsons, Magnolia and tons more.  If you want to catch Foreign Born on tour, they’ll be on the road with sworn Colbert enemy, Grizzly Bear and The Veils.

Datarock – The Pretender

Now to take a trip through the Way-Back Machine through the eyes of Datarock.  Their new album Red gives a firm salute to the 70’s & 80’s and according to Persona Sauna, the Norweigian duo only used equipment that was made before 1983.  And you’ll totally hear it in the sounds.  The remix EP is out now.

Black Moth Super Rainbow – Born On A Day The Sun Didn’t Rise

The music is more uplifting than the title.  Or at least something you can bob your head to.  The Pittsburgh group sees their disc, Eating Us, released this week and will be on the road with Flaming Lips and Aesop Rock all summer.

Bowerbirds – Northern Lights

Over the course of the past two weeks it has becomes the number one blogged about song across the net, officially becoming the spokes-band for groups with the word “bird” in their name.  This comes from the sophomore effort from the North Carolinian’s titled Upper Air, which is fitting since most of the music has its head in the clouds.  That’s a compliment, by the way.  Pick up the disc on July 7.

The XYZ Affair – Sock You In The Face With Love

Now we hop over to Buzzgrinder who posted a new track from the XYZ Affair.  The blog professed their love for the band, maybe “because they’re nice guys, they can get formerly semi-famous Nickelodeon stars to be in a music video, they know how to really cut a rug or because they’re just good. There’s always a reason.”  Awwwww.

Mark Mallman – You’re Never Alone In New York

This one has a voice on it you may recognized, Craig Finn from the Hold Steady.  He comes in about 3/4 of the way thru.  The track sees release on Mallman’s new disc Invincible Criminal which hits stores in early August.

Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse – Just War

Dangermouse AND Sparklehorse.  You heard me right, indie kid.  Both of them.  Together.  The collaboration is called Dark Night of the Soul and for a while there, it was shrouded in mystery.  Actually, it kind of still is.  A month or so ago, the artwork was released to the net tipping off folks that the project might actually exist, but then… nothing.  Until this past week when the whole album went live on NPR’s website.  It turns out that there were unspecified legal troubles with the album’s release with the label EMI, so the band leaked the files out, and put up a button on their website that allowed you to buy a blank CD-R for $10.  The rest, of course, was for you to figure out.  Anyway, to entice you listener, vocals are done by a smorgasbord of who’s-who indie rock, ala The Flaming Lips, Frank Black, The Strokes, Iggy Pop, and Super Furry Animals who handled the vocals for this song.

Free Energy – Dream City

Some Velvet Blog was the site that tipped us off on our next artist, Philadelphia’s Free Energy, who called them “da-doo-run-run meets Thin Lizzy meets the Bay City Rollers with hand claps, 70's rock-riffage and time for some deep deep bong hits.”  The new album is called Stuck On Nothin’.

Phoenix – Lisztomania

Here's a band that have been having a pretty awesome year so far.  This track comes from their much hyped Wolfgang Amedaus Phoenix.  Along with stirring up quite a craze after an SNL set, they’re also hitting Bonnaroo this year in one of the more anticipated sets.  Not to be missed if you’ll be mud diving with the other 80,000.

Boxharp – The Green

A one man work of art.  According to Together In Digital Dreams, Boxharp is the mastermind of uber indie producer Scott Solter who has been responsible for albums by John Vanderslice, The Mountain Goats, Pattern Is Movement, St. Vincent, Okkervil River, and plenty more.  This newest track from his pseudonym features the vocals of Wendy Allen.

The Bavarian Druglords – Goldsoul

This comes from one of Spinner’s Free Mp3’s of the Day.  Their music and name matches their outlook, especially if you check their MySpace in the Sounds Like column is says “cutting open a watermelon to find that it's black inside.”  C’mon boys.  It’s okay to smile now and then.

Au Reviore Simone – All or Nothing

Not only is that song cool, but apparently the band is named after a line in Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure… which makes them super cool.  And aside from running the gamut of the usual TV shows to be featured on – Grey’s, Ugly Betty, etc. – they have a new disc out called Still Night, Still Light that is getting top reviews everywhere.

Bibio – Ambivalence Avenue

Earlier we played a track from a producer taking a swing at being an artist, and here another. This time from across the pond, the British born Stephen Wilkinson has been releasing under the name Bibio for a few years now.

The Tender Box – Beautiful Sin

Not only have they been endorsed by Perez Hilton, but their promo pic has them wearing every indie style that’s made the seen in the last few years.  Like the Hip Kid Village People.

Alright, I’ll stop.  The Weekly Feed is produced by myself and Todd Smith at MixWorks Studio in Louisville, KY.  Interviews were arranged by Allison Riggs.  I’ve been your host Kyle Meredith and remember, if you like what you heard, please pass the word along and we’ll see ya next Monday night at 8 for the Weekly Feed on 91.9 WFPK Radio Louisville.
