WFPK Turns 15!!

WFPK turns 15 years old Saturday, January 8th, 2011.  Not old enough to drive and yet so ready to!!  On Jan. 8th, 1996 at 6am, we flipped from being an all Classical station to what we are today which is known as a Triple A station or Adult Album Alternative.  Instead of playing Bach & Mozart, we started playing Bodeans & Morrissey.  WFPK provided an immediate breath of fresh air to what was mostly classic rock & oldies all along the Louiville dial.  Folks got to hear their older favorites from Van Morrison to Joni Mitchell combined with the up and coming songwriters of that time such as James McMurtry, Joan Osborne & David Gray.  Talking Heads might be followed by The Replacements and then something brand new from Paul Westerberg. There was nothing else like it on the radio at the time in our market and there still isn't!  We are still here and going strong after 15 years because you have shown your support for us time and time again during our membership drives and throughout the year.  Thank you!!! Please join us on the radio this Friday, January 7th from 4-6pm as we reminisce over the many songs from each year that made up the FPK playlist. We'll start in 2010 and go all the way back to the very first song we ever played that freezing, snowy, blustery day at 6am when we were in our little cramped corners at the Louisville Free Public Library. Happy Birthday WFPK!

p.s. This picture is of the famous hanger we used to promote ourselves with way back when. It was recently sent to me by a guy who was in the Old Federal Reserve building on 5th and Liberty and found one in the basement in a locker. Before "Radio Louisville" we called ourselves "The New 92" and before "Louisville Public Media" we were the "Public Radio Partnership".
