Nick is a quiet, sweet three-year-old Labrador/Shepherd mix who is on the small side (just 32 pounds). He is also blind. Nick compensates for his blindness by having a very fine sense of smell and hearing. He listens for new people approaching him and loves to be petted. He also loves finding treats that are hidden for him!
Nick is a bit on the shy side, and it’s no wonder: in addition to being blind, Nick came to the Kentucky Humane Society as part of a hoarding case in a neighboring county. He was one of 14 dogs who came to KHS from the same home. Unfortunately, Nick and the other dogs did not get proper medical care from his former owner: eight of the 14 dogs, including Nick, were heartworm positive. Nick’s brother, Jamenson, is also blind. Nick has received heartworm treatment, and he is ready for a “foster to adopt” home. With heartworm positive dogs, potential adopters foster the dog until he or she tests negative for heartworms (usually about three months). KHS continues to pay for heartworm prevention treatment while the dog is in foster care.
Nick will need a loving, stable home and an understanding owner who can help build his confidence. Please come meet this special young man and see if he is right for you. Although he is blind, once Nick knows you and is comfortable, he will seek out attention. Nick has the same capacity to love unconditionally as every other dog.
