Stevie & Abner: The Hooves Report, June 14

Today at 3:30 for the Paws...I meant The Hooves Report, meet:

From the Kentucky Humane Society’s Equine CARE program we have two special guests on today’s Paws Report: Abner, an orphaned Thoroughbred foal, and Stevie, a special needs horse. They will stop by the station along with Bryce Gill, KHS Equine Development Manager. Abner and Stevie were both rescued by KHS’ Equine CARE program, which is dedicated to helping the state’s at-risk companion or recreational horses. Learn more about these horses and KHS’ newest animal program today at 3:30 p.m.

Abner is a Thoroughbred foal who was orphaned at birth in early February 2016 when his mother had severe birthing complications and was too weak and physically compromised to nurse her baby. The veterinarian called the Kentucky Humane Society’s Equine CARE (connect, assist, rescue, educate) Program to ask us to take the foal, since KHS has experience saving orphaned foals. At just two days old, Abner was very fragile when he arrived at KHS. He required round-the-clock feedings and care by our equine staff and volunteers. Abner was adopted by Mary Rose and Brett Cissell, who own Dark Horse Training Center in Shelbyville; Mary Rose is an experienced horse trainer, and many of our horses are trained by Mary Rose to ready them for adoption.

Stevie is a special needs adult horse. She has an insulin disorder so she cannot eat regular grass. She was also recently adopted.

The Kentucky Humane Society’s Equine CARE program is dedicated to helping Kentucky’s at-risk companion or recreational horses regardless of breed – those who typically don’t have advocates. We help horses in crisis, such as orphaned foals like Abner, and special needs horses like Stevie. We also assist at-risk free-roaming horses in Eastern Kentucky and offer free gelding clinics to help reduce the number of unwanted horses. This spring KHS opened the KHS Equine CARE Rescue Barn, where many of our horses are cared for.
