Guitarist/singer/songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist Shuggie Otis may not be a household name, but his “Strawberry Letter 23” is in the record collections of millions of households. The Brothers Johnson’s cover of “Strawberry Letter 23” has sold over a million copies. Born Johnny Otis, Jr., he was nicknamed Shuggie by his mother (short for “sugar”) and is the son of rhythm and blues musician Johnny Otis. Considered a child prodigy, he started performing alongside his father and appearing on albums as a session player in his teens. He released his first solo record in 1970, and has recorded with Frank Zappa, Al Kooper, Etta James, and most recently Mos Def. He also turned down an offer to join the Rolling Stones! His music is a timeless mix of R&B, Rock, Pop, Funk, Soul & Blues. Shuggie Otis turns 63 this Wednesday, and we’ll celebrate a day early spinning his tunes as our Tuesday Featured Artist!
