Down and Nerdy: Nerdy songs FTW

IN WHICH nerdy music is celebrated with much joy and shouting. Two distinct, four-digit numbers are involved - which, as you know, is the mark of quality!

Our Question of the Week has been all about nerdy songs, and today Briana and James weigh in with their votes ...

Briana's pick: "Positive Contact" by Deltron 3030

In response to WFPK’s Question of the Week, “what’s the nerdiest song of all time?”, James and I have searched the depths of our massive brains to bring you our picks. My choice: Deltron 3030’s “Positive Contact,” which continues the tale of a computer geek and renegade nerd, Deltron Zero’s plan to destroy the evil corporations and corrupt politicians who dominate the universe, thus reclaiming Earth’s music and saving hip-hop.

“Art avenger, let's start the adventure. Hit ya with nerve gas, absurd blasts. Crashin’ space craft, I'm bio-enhanced.”

Deltron 3030 is the brainchild of 3 hip-hop superstars; MC Del tha Funkee Homosapien, producer / beat maker Dan the Automator, and DJ Kid Koala. When I first heard Deltron 3030 back in 2000 it was like all my wildest, rap loving, space dreaming, mega-corporation hating dreams come true. Deltron 3030 is also one of the precursors to the nerdcore genre of hip hop, which is a whole ‘nother story. “Virus” is my favorite track on the album and the theme song to nerd revenge in the present AND future. Plus it’s got a good beat and you can dance to it.

James' pick ...

OK, let's play "Name that Nerdy Tune." Scroll down carefully so you only reveal one clue at a time, and see if you can guess the song in as few clues as possible. Ready to play?

It takes place in the year 2062.

It's just over 20 minutes long.

It takes place in a world where all artistic expression - music, painting, poetry, everything - is controlled by the religious leaders that rule society.

The hero of the story finds an ancient musical instrument - a guitar - and discovers what it means to make music himself.

He takes the guitar to the priests, who tell him it is forbidden and destroy it.

The man later receives a vision from the "Elder Race," which is waiting to return and dethrone the priests.

Our story ends ambiguously, with invaders from outer space informing "all planets of the Solar Federation ... we have assumed control ... we have assumed control ..."

NERDGASM! Yes, of course, it's 2112 by the mighty Rush. Here they are, performing this geek opus in all of its majesty (1997, best version I could find)...
