The Weekly Feed 4/20

Welcome to the April 20th edition of The Weekly Feed.  We’ve got a great show lined up with a TON of new music from new artists, including Dirty Projectors, Phoenix, The Tallest Man On Earth, as well as Rancid and The Vaselines.  We’re also going to checking with Robert Gomez, John Vanderslice, and Drink Up Buttercup via phone to see what they’ve been up to and what they have coming up. *NEWS*

As usual, musicians knew how to keep a week interesting.  Bands like The Streets started taking twitter to the next level, releasing songs via the micro-blogger.  Trent Reznor released his iPhone application for Nine Inch Nails fans, and from all accounts it’s a success and bound to change the entire way artists and fans can interact.  And Record Store Day happened, bringing the mass’s back into the buildings that built this whole industry and gave us all reason to pop on the headphones and get it away from it all.

The Show...

Desire – Dans Mes Reves

So with that in mind, lets get this started with our first artist. According to Discodust, “Johnny jewel, the mastermind behind italians do it better, chromatics, & glass candy has recently left his hometown of Portland for Montreal where he met singer Megan Louise, leading to his latest project 'Desire'.”  With lyrics in French and English, this is the newest track to keep the kids on the dance floor for one more go-round.

The Vaselines – Son of a Gun

Half of you will know them only because Nirvana covered a vast amount of their catalog back in the day, but those of you in the know will remember them as one of the best and underrated bands from Alt. music’s early days.  Subpop is giving them the reissue treatment with a handful of demo’s and never-been-released material and that’ll hit shelves on May 5th.  If you’re uninitiated, I recommend picking that one up.

Rancid – Last One To Die

From nearly the same time period, the punk revivalists in Rancid have finally released their newest single after nearly six years of silence.   As Consequence of Sound points out, “In that time, Jack White has released five albums, two different presidents have held down the White House, and the Cubs, well, have continued to choke.”  All that aside, it seems everyone has posted about the track, but no one has taken sides on if they like, which I guess goes to say, if you’re already a fan and have been waiting for this long, you’re probably gonna love it.  If you didn’t care before, well… its only two minutes long.

Dirty Projectors – Stillness In The Move

The band, and this track, seems to be the big heat sinker this week making the rounds through everyone from Pop Tarts Suck Toasted all the way to NPR who called them “a strange mating dance of controlled cacophony and catchy melody.” Pick up their disc Bitte Orca on June 9.

Robert Gomez – On This Day

Earlier we got a chance to catch up with Robert Gomez who’s new disc Pine Sticks and Phosphorus gets released this week.  He shed some light on his beautiful new track “On This Day” and where the inspiration came from to pen it.

Generationals – Angry Charlie

Their full length doesn’t drop until July but you can stream the entire record now on their website.

Islands – Cyanide Breathe Mint

Covering the classic Beck song Cyanide Breathe Mint.  Timely cover, too, since Beck just reissued his long out of print dirty folk album, One Foot In The Grave.

* Video Compilation Time!!!*

Phoenix – 1901 (David Miller Nu Wave Remix)

We debuted this track well over a month ago, and what a month can bring.  The newest single from Phoenix has gone from blogger favorite to near mainstream hit.  The band recently tore up the SNL set with a fiery trio of songs and it seems like this track has been remixed by everyone and their mother at this point.  But Caution should be taken, as there are only a few worthy versions out there.

Dave Matthews Band – Funny The Way It Is

I actually debated over playing this on a mostly indie based show, but as the rules go, I play songs that were the big talk of Blog Land, and this, oh this, was big, big talk.  It seemed every major blog, much to my surprise, covered the free download and the indie kids talked!!! You can still log on to Stereogum and find half of the readers standing up for the DMB and the other half slamming its very existence.  This stuff?  This is the reason blogs even exist.

Drink Up Buttercup – Sosey & Doesy

A group that has been making some big noise of their own ever since they wowed the crowds at last years CMJ Festival.  The band Drink Up Buttercup are a three vocalist group with unique melodies and fun sounds and earlier I ask band member Ben if there is a competitive nature having three different leads.

The Tallest Man On Earth – I Won’t Be Found

An artist I had almost forgot about until I Am Fuel reminded me with a post this week.  The Tallest Man On Earth is one of the most intense figures I’ve ever seen on stage.  And what is so surprising about how perfectly he invokes Dylan and Cash is that… he’s from Sweden.  A swede who does Americana better than most Americans I’ve heard.  His album Shallow Grave is out now.

John Vanderslice – Fetal Horses

Romanian Names is the name of the new disc, featuring a new territory for John – love songs.  Kind of.  One of those love songs may be about Shaq O’Neil, too.  The full interview is below, including John talking about his tweets with the massive NBA player.

Bill Callahan – Eid Ma Clack Shaw

I’ve heard this song dozens of times now, but I’m still not sure what he was talking about.  Sounds like a crazy dream with some gibberish thrown in.  Anyway, some of you will remember him by his alter-ego, Smog, who had the awesome song Cold Blooded Old Times from the Hi Fidelity soundtracks.  His disc, Sometimes I Wish I were An Eagle is out now.

*End*
